AWARDS

ADVERTISING

\ AD2 OF THE ROANOKE VALLEY has been awarded the Mayor's Committee for the Disabled Award of Excellence.

AD2 members created a multimedia campaign for the Center for Independence for the Disabled Inc., consisting of newspaper ads, radio and television spots and posters. Contributors to the project include SHAWN MURRAY and DAVID HODGE (art and creative directors), ERIC WELTNER and TODD MARCUM (copywriters) and PAMELA DERK.

The campaign was selected for increasing awareness of disability concerns and for promoting community integration and interaction with persons with disabilities.

\ JOHN LAMBERT ASSOCIATES, a Roanoke marketing communications firm, won two awards in an advertising competition sponsored by the Carolinas Healthcare Public Relations and Marketing Society.

The firm won both first and second places in the newspaper advertising category for work on behalf of Valdese General Hospital in Valdese, N.C.

The two advertising campaigns were for the hospital's obstetrics program and for its magnetic resonance imaging machine.

The ROANOKE TIMES & WORLD-NEWS is one of 18 U.S. retailers and media companies given awards of excellence for special advertising created for Mother's Day and Father's Day promotions during 1991. The awards were sponsored by Father's Day Council Inc./Mother's Day Council Inc., a New York advertising organization to promote the two holidays. The winning local ad was created for the Credit Marketing and Management Association for its annual Mother of the Year program.

HOTEL

\ PETER PARSONS has been named 1991 General Manager of the Year by the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association International, Chapter of the Virginias. The award honors general managers who are outstanding in their involvement with and support of sales and marketing efforts in their hotels. Parsons is the general manager of the Roanoke Airport Marriott.

INSURANCE

\ WILLIAM H. SPENCER, a general agent with Franklin Life Insurance Co., has qualified for Franklin's Circle of Champions Club, a national honor organization of the company's most successful managers. Spencer's qualification was based upon his outstanding recruiting activity.

LAND RECLAMATION

\ AMLITE CORP. is the recipient of the Forest Service's Southern Region Stewardship Award for its outstanding cooperation in land reclamation activities at the Amlite Quarry site north of the James River in Amherst County, in George Washington National Forest's Pedlar Ranger District.

The quarry was operated by various companies until 1984, when Amlite Corp. concluded that an economic operation was not feasible. In cooperation with the Virginia Division of Mined Land Reclamation and Rockydale Quarries of Roanoke (representing Amlite Corp.), reclamation was initiated.

Today, more than 90 percent of the reclamation is completed.

ORGANIZATIONS

The NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION has been awarded the\ Industry Association Development Award by the Business Roundtable, a consortium\ of 200 chief executive officers from corporations around the United States.\ In addition to the award, the association will receive a $50,000 grant.\ The organization plans to use the grant to develop a safety standard\ improvement program to enhance safety within the electrical construction\ industry.

SERVICES

Roanoke Restaurant Service Inc. recently gave its first Driver of the Year Award to DREW RHODES. Rhodes, who serves the company's clients in Roanoke and Lynchburg, has driven four years without an accident. The award entitles him to drive a new, specially equipped truck this year with his name painted on the side.

Pearle Inc., headquartered in Dallas, has presented its Visions of Quality award for superior quality and service to the PEARLE VISION CENTER at 4385 Electric Road in Roanoke. Pearle, Inc. presents the award to its stores that have a superior rating on quality reviews conducted three times a year throughout the Pearle system.

\ PHILLIP D. SOUTHERN of Newport was one of 115 contestants who participated in the Case Loader/Backhoe North American Rodeo Championship in Phoenix, Ariz. He qualified for the final competition by winning the local case loader/backhoe rodeo sponsored by Baker Brothers Inc. of Roanoke. He is employed by H.J. Snider Inc. of Blacksburg.
