MAN ASPHYXIATED, GIRL FOUND IN COMA
A dead man and an unconscious girl were found in a car Saturday in a remote area of Essex County, sheriff's officials said. The pair apparently suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, Sheriff Damon Davis said.
Scott Hodges, 20, and the girl, 16, were missing from the town of Tappahannock for a week, Davis said.
Davis refused to release the girl's name, but said she was a student at Essex County High School.
The girl was admitted to the emergency room of the Medical College of Virginia, hospital spokeswoman Linda Lewis said. There was no immediate report on her condition.
The pair was found by hunters Saturday morning on a dirt road off Virginia 627.
They apparently had been in the Ford station wagon for about two days when they were discovered, Davis said.
Davis said it was not immediately known whether the poisoning was accidental or intentional.
"It appears they were there with the car running and the exhaust fumes seeped into the car," he said. "It appears they backed up into an open field at the edge of a wood and sat right there."
All the car's windows were found closed, he said.
