BEDFORD OFFICER HURT BY HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER
A Bedford police officer was hit by a pickup truck's side mirror as he was making a routine traffic stop on U.S. 460 near city limits early Saturday.Officer J.E. Kincaid was walking back to his car after talking to the motorist he had stopped when he was hit by the truck's rear-view mirror. He was treated and released from Bedford County Memorial Hospital for injuries to his left arm and wrist.
Sgt. R.L. Bush, who was at the scene, caught up with the truck's driver 1 1/2 miles away in Bedford County.
The driver, Bobby Ray Karnes, 20, of Thaxton, was charged with drunken driving and a felony charge of failing to stop at a scene involving personal injury. He was being held on a $5,000 bond Saturday, said state Trooper Larry L. Willis Jr., the arresting officer.
