CAVALIERS REBOUND, ROUT CLEMSON 85-52

There must have been a better time for Clemson to visit Virginia than immediately after UVa's first loss of the basketball season.

The Cavaliers, who still hadn't forgotten a loss to the Tigers in the ACC Tournament, led by 40 points Saturday night in an 85-52 romp before 6,938 at University Hall.

Senior guards Dawn Staley and Tammi Reiss had 19 points each for top-ranked Virginia (14-1 overall, 4-1 in the ACC).

Clemson (10-4, 2-3) had been scoring 82.5 points per game, but the 17th-ranked Tigers scored only six points in the first 11 minutes and trailed 52-22 at halftime.

"It's not easy for me after a shellacking like that," said Clemson coach Jim Davis, whose Tigers beat UVa 65-62 in the ACC Tournament semifinals. "We're not in the same league with them."

Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said: "I was absolutely shocked to see we were up by 30 at the half. This team really handled the loss [to Maryland] well."

Staley and Reiss, who were a combined 7-for-32 from the field in the loss to the Terps, were 13-of-18 against Clemson. The Cavaliers shot 51.7 percent as a team, compared to Clemson's 27.3.

"Debbie tried hard not to make it a long three days," Reiss said, "but it hurt to pick up the paper the next day and read that Staley and Reiss were 7-of-32. You have to take it personally.

"It doesn't devastate us, but, in the back of our minds, we know we were embarrassed. When you can come back with a win like this, it makes it easier to forget the loss."
