UVA, TIGERS DOMINATE INDOOR MEET

The University of Virginia and Clemson University proved to be the strongest track and field teams Saturday in the Santee Marriott Indoor Track Invitational at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.

The field was made up of almost 1,000 athletes representing more than 45 schools.

The Virginia women had five first-place finishes, and the UVa men added four top-six performances. For UVa, Angela Griffith won the 500, Rebecca Grube won the long jump and Elizabeth Mullet won the high jump.

The Clemson women captured first in three events, and the Tiger men took a first and several top-six finishes.

Heidi Allen of Virginia Tech won the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:57.5. The Hokies' assistant cross country coach, Lori Taylor, finished second in 10:20.6.

Tech's Cedric Patrick finished third in the men's 200 and broke a school record with a time of 22.41 seconds.

Tech cross country coach Steve Taylor won the men's 5,000 in a time of 14:22.0. Eric Parlette took second in the 1,000 and Travis Walter placed third in the 3,000.

Other Virginia athletes who won events: James Madison's Jerry Roney in the 55 hurdles; Johnny Prettyman of Liberty in the 1,000; Juli Speights of JMU in the 800; and JMU's Tiombe Hurd in the triple jump. - Staff report
