MONARCHS RIP REBELS 5-1
If there was ever a good time to be playing the Greensboro Monarchs, it was Sunday night. But as Greensboro proved again to the Roanoke Valley Rebels, there is no good time to be playing the Monarchs.
Greensboro, playing for the 12th time in 16 days, whipped the Rebels 5-1 in East Coast Hockey League action.
"It was a solid effort by a lot of people that don't put up big numbers," Monarchs coach Jeff Brubaker said. "They worked Roanoke to death tonight."
The Rebels beat the Monarchs 8-5 on Dec. 31. Since then, Roanoke Valley has dropped out of sight in the ECHL's East Division race.
Roanoke Valley (13-22-3) has the worst record in the league. The division-leading Monarchs (28-13-3) have the best.
It was mismatch from the beginning.
Phil Berger scored two of the first three Greensboro goals to break Len Soccio's regular-season scoring record of 91 points. Nick Vitucci stopped 22 shots, and the Monarchs "no-name" defense swarmed over the Rebels.
Greensboro took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Scott White and Berger, whose shot with 46 seconds left in the period tied the season scoring record.
Vitucci stopped all nine Roanoke Valley shots in the first period.
Rebels goalie Mike James stopped 15 of Greensboro's 17 shots and heard five others bounce off the pipes.
Eric Lemarque hit the posts three times in the first 20 minutes, Boyd Sutton and Peter Senter each hit the posts in the opening period.
Berger added his second goal at 7:29 of the second period.
White and Sutton scored in the third period after Terry Virtue scored Roanoke Valley's goal on an assist from Brian Bellefeuille. The Rebels' goal came seconds after a Greensboro timeout.
\ ICE CHIP: Roanoke Valley continues its road trip with a game against the Johnstown Chiefs on Wednesday. The Rebels return home to the LancerLot in Vinton for games Friday night and Saturday night against the Dayton Bombers.
