NORFOLK PLAYER PICKS CAVALIERS
Demetrius "Pete" Allen from Granby High in Norfolk made an oral commitment Monday to Virginia after returning from a recruiting visit to Penn State.Allen, seventh on the Roanoke Times & World-News list of the top 25 football prospects in Virginia, played quarterback at Granby but was recruited by UVa as a wide receiver and defensive back.
Allen, 6 feet and 160 pounds, has been timed in 10.6 seconds for 100 meters. He may play baseball at UVa after batting .433 with 23 steals as a junior.
The Cavaliers have commitments from 11 football players, including 6-foot, 210-pound Scott Allanson, a linebacker from St. Albans School in Washington. However, UVa lost lineman Jeremy Akers from St. Albans to Notre Dame.
Virginia Tech has received its eighth commitment, from Chris Breheny, a 6-3, 270-pound defensive lineman from Nassau County (N.Y.) Community College.
Breheny, originally from Medford, N.Y., visited Tech and Cincinnati and canceled a trip to Maryland. He had 97 tackles, including six sacks. - DOUG DOUGHTY
