WILDER PAYS STATE $5,400 FOR PHONE CALLS
Gov. Douglas Wilder's office paid the state nearly $5,400 last year for private and political use of office phones, 12 times more than was paid in 1990, a newspaper reported Monday. The Daily Progress of Charlottesville said the largest single reimbursement was a $5,000 check written Dec. 30, three days after the newspaper filed a request for the information under the state's Freedom of Information Act.
Wilder's reimbursements for telephone calls were for less than 1 percent of the total bill from the state in 1990. Last year, the reimbursements were for nearly 10 percent of the state's phone bills to his office.
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled 4-3 last September that Wilder can continue to keep his phone records secret. - Associated Press
