AMMONIA SPILL CAUSES NO INJURIES
An ammonia spill at the vacant Magnetic Bearings plant Monday caused a lot of work for emergency crews, but no injuries. An undetermined amount of ammonia leaked from a tank when workers were moving it, said the company's director of manufacturing, Ian Rae.
Radford emergency crews responded to the scene when the workers called at about noon. The Roanoke Valley Hazardous Material Response Team was later called because it's the closest cleanup team for such materials, said Larry Amy, the city's environmental engineer.
The tank holds 150 pounds of anhydrous ammonia, and is owned by Marshall Welding Supplies in Pulaski. Rae said Magnetic Bearings only leased the tanks of ammonia, used in the printing process.
Magnetic Bearings moved to Roanoke County last week and left the plant on Rock Road.
Marshall employees were removing the tank when the spill occured, city officials said.
