ERRORS DISTORT TOWN'S COST-OF-LIVING DATA

Town officials say incorrect reports of Leesburg's cost of living are a result of a series of research errors and misinterpreted data.

The Loudoun County government collected information for a quarterly cost-of-living report distributed last week by the Alexandria-based American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association.

One mistake occurred when the association apparently misread the Loudoun officials' return address - Leesburg, the county seat - as the actual jurisdiction surveyed, and the report pinned the countywide data squarely on the town.

Leesburg had the highest cost of living of any Virginia jurisdiction surveyed, but only eight communities beyond the Capital Beltway were surveyed, including Richmond, Fredericksburg, Lynchburg and Roanoke. - Associated Press
