RADFORD WOMEN'S SHOOTING BRINGS DOWN CAMPBELL WIN

The Lady Highlanders showed Saturday night that a good offense can stop a good defense.

Campbell's women's basketball team came into the showdown for first place in Big South Conference leading the conference in team defense, allowing just 62.8 points per game.

But Radford led the conference in scoring at 73.5 points a game.

The showdown turned into an 83-53 rout as Radford hit over 60 percent of its shots in the second half.

The Lady Highlanders shot a season-high 52.3 percent from the field against a Campbell squad that averaged holding its opponents under 40 percent shooting.

The 83 points were just one less than RU's season-high. And the 53 points allowed were the fewest any opponent had scored against Radford.

The loss ended Campbell's 17-game conference winning streak. The Camels last loss before Saturday night was Feb 17, 1990 against Radford.

\ MORE RU WOMEN'S STATS AND STUFF: Senior guard Patrinda Toney has led the Lady Highlanders in scoring or assists - or both - in all 16 of their games through last Saturday. Toney has been the high-scorer 10 times and on 13 occasions she has dished out the most assists.

Tammie Crown leads the team with five double-doubles (10 or more points and rebounds). She has also led the team in rebounding 10 times in 16 games.

Coincidently - or maybe not - they are the only two players who have started every game.

Walk-on freshman Jennifer Goode got her first start of the season against Campbell. She made her only shot and pulled down a season-high five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Shannan Wilkey was an honorable mention selection for Big South Conference Player of the Week. She scored 29 points and had 14 rebounds.

\ IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED: Doug Day was named the Big South Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games from Jan. 13 to 19.

The 6-foot-1 guard from Blacksburg scored 78 points in three games, all conference wins for the Highlanders.

The week before Day was the honorable mention for the award after his eight 3-pointers and 33 total points against Maryland-Baltimore County.

Day is second in the conference in scoring at 19.9 points per game, through Jan. 19. And he leads the Big South with almost four three-pointers a game.

\ SCORING WHILE LOSING: The men's gymnastics team set two team records last weekend despite their loss. The Highlanders set team records in the pommel horse, 39.25 points, and vault, 44.24 points, in a 258.95-252.5 loss to Pittsburgh. Also in that meet, sophomore Michael Salerno tied the school record for the parallel bars with a 9.1 score.
