The Rev. Philip Godfrey Browne, chaplain of Boys' Home, died Friday night at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. Father Browne has been chaplain of Boys' Home since July of 1988 and during his service the chapel underwent an extensive renovation which were completed in the fall of 1991. He had come to Boys' Home following service as Chaplain at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. He had served at the Memorial Church of the Good Shephard, Parkersburg, W.Va., and in Page County, Episcopal Cure. He graduated from Michigan State University and Philadelphia Divinity School prior to being ordained as an Episcopal priest. He was born April 6, 1949, in Tecumseh, Michigan, a son of the late William Fitzhugh and Ruth Browne. He was a member of the Covington-Hot Springs Rotary Club. He married Virginia Amend on May 18, 1974. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Thomas "Hugh" Fitzhugh Browne and Sames "Fritz" Frederick Browne, all of Route 3, Covington; a brother, William Browne of Tecumsheh, Michigan; a sister, Hilary Coffman of Aiea, Hawaii; 13 nieces and nephews. A memorial service was conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Covington. The Rt. Rev. A. Heath Light, Episcopal Bishop of the Southwestern Diocese of Virginia was Celebrant at the service with the Rt. Rev. Robert P. Atkinson, Suffragen Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia, Preacher. Committal will be at a later date in Luray. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes take the form of gifts to Boys' Home, Covington. The family also suggests that individuals consider signing organ donor cards. The funeral home in Luray is in charge of arrangements.
