PHILADELPHIA WRITERS HONOR UVA'S STALEY

Virginia basketball star Dawn Staley will receive the Outstanding Philadelphia Amateur Athlete award on Feb. 3 at the 88th Philadelphia Sports Writers Association's awards dinner.

Staley, a native of North Philadelphia, is Virginia's all-time leader in scoring and assists and is second in steals. She is averaging 15.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.3 assists this year for the No. 2-ranked Cavaliers (14-1).

Among the previously announced award winners: Humanitarian, Eagles running back Keith Byars; Philadelphia Athlete, track star Leroy Burrell; Pro Athlete, auto racer Michael Andretti; Living Legend, former Eagles receiver Tommy McDonald. - From Associated Press, staff reports
