VMI'S CARPENTER WINS HONOR FOR BLOCKING

VMI football center Lorenzo Carpenter was selected winner of the 1991 Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the outstanding blocker in the Southern Conference.

Carpenter, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound junior from Indian River High School in Chesapeake, has been VMI's starting center since the fourth game of his freshman year. He was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection and a first-team All-State selection by the Roanoke Times & World-News.

The award is presented to the top blocker in the Southern, Atlantic Coast, Southeastern and South Atlantic conferences, plus the state of South Carolina. Virginia offensive lineman Ray Roberts won the award for the ACC. - Staff report
