GRAYSON CO. ENDS FORT CHISWELL'S WIN STREAK AT 10 GAMES

Grayson County got balanced scoring and 71 percent shooting from the free-throw line to upend Fort Chiswell 85-75 and hand the state's No. 3-ranked Group A boys' basketball team its first loss Tuesday night.

The Blue Devils (9-3 overall, 9-1 in the Mountain Empire District) exploited superior size to pound the ball inside to Mitch Hawks (25 points, 11-of-13 at the line) and Bonner Satterwhite (16). Wilbert Campbell, the point guard, had a pair of 3-pointers and scored 22 points, and shooting guard Devin Floyd added 15.

Brian Lampkins scored a career high with 34 points and topped 30 points for the third time this year for the Pioneers (10-1, 8-1). \

Bath County 48

HOT SPRINGS - After trailing for most of the game, the Chargers overcame the Fighting Blues in a Pioneer District game when senior Matt Sherrard drove for the winning basket with five seconds remaining.

Bath County's Craig Phillips, who scored 12 points, tied the score for the first time at 41 with 3:19 remaining. The lead see-sawed until the end. Parry McCluer (4-6 overall, 3-5 Pioneer) called time out with two seconds remaining and Brian Sizemore's final shot hit the rim and bounced away.

Todd Jenkins scored nine of his team-leading 19 points in the fourth quarter for Bath County (10-3, 9-2). Leslie Gray scored a game-high 27 points for the Fighting Blues. \

Bassett 71

Chatham 57

Bassett trailed Chatham by two points at the end of the first quarter, but the Bengals outscored the Cavaliers 19-11 in the second quarter to win the Piedmont District game.

Dytanyon Norman scored 10 of 23 points in second and added seven in the third to pace the Bengals to victory.

Bassett's Art Wade had 22 points and Stacey Valentine had 12. \

Northwood 63

Chilhowie 44

CHILHOWIE - The Panthers took control in the second half to register a Hogoheegee District victory.

Northwood outscored Chilhowie 36-19 after the intermission to pull away.

Scott Waddle led a balanced Northwood attack with 14 points. Jason Clendenin added 13 points, and Jon and Jason Griffin had 11 each.

Chilhowie (3-5, 2-3) got 10 points from Jason Fore. \

Monday's game Martinsville 63, Patrick County 50: In Stuart, victory

continues eluding Patrick County, but the Cougars keep getting closer. For a half, it looked as if Patrick County's three-quarter-court trap would capture a victory, but Martinsville stepped up its defensive pressure and wore down the Cougars for the Piedmont District boys' victory.

Mike Frazier's 23 points for Martinsville (8-2, 7-2) led all scorers; he was 12-for-15 on free throws. Jason Odell added 13 points and hit all five of his free throws. Demetrius Martin added 10 points.

Chris Reynolds' 16 points and Mike Wood's 15 led Patrick County (0-11, 0-9), which lost 72-66 to district power Magna Vista on Friday night. \
