FLOYD IGA CLOSES, LEAVING 1 SUPERMARKET
The IGA Supermarket closed Tuesday morning because of financial difficulties."It's a sign of the times," said Bob Kober, who along with his wife, Dawn, owns the supermarket on North Main Street.
"We ran out of money. It's the Floyd economy," he said.
Kober cited the closing of the Sara Lee Knitting Plant as one of the major reasons for the store's demise.
According to Kober, Richfood, his supplier, "basically foreclosed" on its inventory in the store without warning.
A sign on the door of the IGA read: `Until Further Notice Store Closed." And a man inside the store would only say "No comment."
The Kobers operated the store for about three years.
Bob Kober would not say whether it would reopen.
The store has been a supermarket under different ownerships since the mid-1970s.
The closing of IGA leaves just one supermarket in the county - Slaughter's Supermarket just south of the town of Floyd.
