JOHN WISE, FORMER W&L PROFESSOR, DIES
John H. Wise, a chemistry professor at Washington and Lee University for 35 years, died Monday in Roanoke. He was 71.As a young research chemist at Brown University in the 1940s, Wise worked on the Project Manhattan atomic bomb effort. He taught at Brown and at Stanford University before coming to W&L in 1953. He retired in 1988.
During his years in Lexington, Wise did atomic research at the Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Argonne, Ill., national laboratories. He was co-author of two chemistry manuals.
