BRUSH FIRE LIGHTS UP I-81
Pulaski County firefighters spent Tuesday afternoon battling a brush fire that spread from Interstate 81 into the Mountain View community, burning several acres.Jerry Covey said he and a neighbor noticed three distinct fires shortly before noon. Covey said the fire started beside the interstate directly in front of his house, then jumped his fence and burned about six acres of his property including rows of 2-year-old white pines he had planted as a buffer between his home and the interstate.
"I hope I can get it planted back within the next month," Covey said.
He said the combination of dry grass and the young pines made a good fuel, causing the fire to spread.
Covey said a neighbor also had five or six acres burned. He said his home and others along Wilderness Road were never really threatened by the fire because of the quick response of the Newbern, Pulaski, Fairlawn and Dublin fire departments.
