MARSHALL RETURNS TO JUDGE'S BENCH AFTER RETIRING
Lawyers, reporters and spectators packed a stately courtroom Tuesday to watch former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall come out of retirement and return to the bench he left more than 25 years ago.But for Marshall, 83, it was just another day at work.
"I'm just doing it because I'm supposed to," Marshall told reporters after listening to arguments before the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. "I enjoy working."
The characteristically gruff Marshall said little afterward.
"I don't have the slightest idea," Marshall said when asked how he would be remembered by historians.
His opinion of his replacement, Justice Clarence Thomas?
"No comment. None at all. I wish him the best."
Marshall, the first black appointed to the Supreme Court, retired last year but remains a senior judge eligible to hear cases.
