MONTGOMERY BOARD APPROVES SCHOOL BUDGET
The Montgomery County School Board voted 8-1 Tuesday night to send a budget to the Board of Supervisors based on what it considers to be the county's educational needs, rather than on the current economic realities. The budget would require roughly $11.5 million in new county funding. The total budget would be $52.3 million compared with current year's spending of $39.4 million.
The only changes the board made Tuesday night were a reduction in the amount the board is willing to pay for family health care coverage for employees and an addition of $220,000 for a contingency fund.
The county's participation in family health care coverage would be reduced to one-half the premium cost. The county would continue to pay the full premium for single employee coverage.
The proposed budget contains a raise for teachers that averages 15.24 percent.
The School Board will present the new budget to the board of supervisors in early February.
