RATE-HIKE REQUEST IS OUTRAGEOUS

HOW ASININE can Virginia Power Co. get, to ask a $184 million rate increase to keep its rate of return at 13 percent, when there are thousands of unemployed people and many hungry and homeless on the streets? I cannot believe they could be this heartless.

At this time of economic decline in our country, they should be happy just to break even on a small profit of 3 to 5 percent. Their employees are working and their executives are getting their large salaries. What more can they want?

In the Jan. 8 paper was another article headlined: "Va. Power to pay $140 million for cleanup." Sounds to me like the rate increase is for $140 million for cleanup and $44 million extra profit. Why should Virginia pay to clean up $140 million in pollution in West Virginia?

If the State Corporation Commission grants this request, they should be regarded as traitors to the poor and unemployed in Virginia and dealt with accordingly. Come on, Virginians, let's hear from you on this outrageous request. HIDY D. RIDDLEBERGER GOODVIEW
