GROUP PROMOTES WOMEN FOR VICE-PRESIDENTIAL SPOT

Democrats are months from choosing a presidential nominee, but a national women's group Wednesday began circulating a list of six women it says the eventual candidate should consider for vice president.

The National Women's Political Caucus Democratic task force listed Texas Gov. Ann Richards, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Reps. Pat Schroeder of Colorado and Barbara Kennelly of Connecticut, District of Columbia Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein.

Caucus President Harriett Woods said each of the group's recommended vice presidential candidates would strengthen the ticket "and have special attraction for the majority of voters, who happen to be women."

The Democratic Task Force of the bipartisan caucus also released a guide to the five major Democratic presidential candidates - former California Gov. Jerry Brown, Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey and former Massachusetts Sen. Paul Tsongas.

Among factors cited by the task force:

All five candidates support legalized abortion, but Harkin and Tsongas have the strongest records in favor.

Tsongas sponsored the Equal Rights Amendment in the 99th Congress.

Tsongas and Brown have been most supportive of gay and lesbian rights.

Clinton got a "good guy" award from the caucus in 1988 for leadership in a national campaign for better child care.
