GILES DMV APPLICATION GETS APPROVAL FROM STATE
The state Department of Motor Vehicles has informed the Giles County Board of Supervisors that the DMV has approved county Treasurer Richard Cook's application to serve as a licensing agent starting March 2.A letter from DMV Commissioner Donald Williams was read at the supervisors' Tuesday meeting. Williams said the DMV has been working with county officials for the past several months to restore services to the county. He also said that Cook, as a local elected official, has agreed to provide the service without state compensation. Cook was elected in November.
County Administrator Ken Weaver said the final step in restoring the service will be completed after the supervisors have signed an agreement with DMV. That will happen as soon as it arrives from Richmond, he said.
Giles residents did DMV business through the county treasurer in Pearisburg until last July when the service was pulled out as a part of state budget cuts. Residents have had to drive 30 miles to the nearest DMV office in Christiansburg for services. The DMV had paid the county treasurer more than $19,000 last year.
