RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. TED BURKE has joined the staff of the Roanoke Valley Cathedral of Praise as minister of youth and education. Burke, 42, comes from an interim pastorate at the Moneta Church of God. The Hampton native was educated at East Coast Bible College and the theological school of the Church of God in Cleveland, Tenn.

He is an Air Force veteran and served a church in Omaha, Neb. for more than three years. With him in Vinton are two of his three sons, Andy and Aaron, students at William Byrd High School. Cathredal of Praise, formerly Williamson Road Church of God, plans to relocate to the Hollins area this year.

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED will hear the Rev. Glenna Parrish of Lynchburg at its annual meeting Friday at High Street Baptist Church, 2302 Florida Ave. N.W. Parrish, a pastoral counselor for Disciples of Christ churches, will review the national Church Women United group's 50th anniversary celebration in St. Louis. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

\ "COLUMBUS AS CATHOLIC EDUCATOR" is the theme of a liturgy of thanksgiving service Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the Roanoke Catholic High School gymnasium, 621 N. Jefferson St. The service marks the beginning of observances of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus, who sought to bring Christianity to pagans of the unknown world.

\ RELIGION AND RACE CONVERSATIONS, an ecumenical group bringing church people of different races together, will meet Monday at 7:15 p.m. at the United Methodist Home to participate in Black History Month observances.

\ GARDEN OF PRAYER 7 CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST, 3101 Cove Road N.W., is observing its 22nd anniversary through Friday 7:30 p.m. The final program of music and worship will be Sunday at 5 p.m. The Rev. Shadrack Brown Jr., pastor, will lead the service.

AN ECUMENICAL PRAYER GROUP, established about six months ago at Madonna House retreat center in Roanoke, is still accepting members. The group meet the fourth Friday night at 7:30. Sister Fidelis Rubbo, parish coordinator of St. Francis Catholic Church in Rocky Mount, is the spiritual director. For more information, call Linda Owen at 343-8464.
