VINTON TO PURCHASE 2 NEW POLICE CARS

Vinton police officers soon will have two new vehicles. Town Council voted Tuesday to purchase the cars for $26,888.

Money for the cars was included in the current budget, said Town Manager Brad Corcoran. Each year, the department retires two automobiles with odometer readings in excess of 100,000 miles and replaces them.

This year, Corcoran said, the state has awarded the contract for providing vehicles to a Ford dealership in Alexandria. The new cars will be 1992 Crown Victorias.

In other action:

Council joined Roanoke and Roanoke County in extending a negotiation deadline for Salem and Montgomery County to join the new Roanoke Valley Resource Authority, which will manage the new landfill at Smith Gap.

Salem and Montgomery County had until today to decide, but the deadline was extended 90 days to March 24. Corcoran, who is on the negotiating team, said that both governments seem interested, but several issues still need to be resolved.

Council agreed to review and establish the town's 1992 goals and objectives during its Feb. 18 work session.

Corcoran, who requested the review, said nearly 80 percent of the goals were met last year. Those that weren't generally hadn't been included in the budget, so there were no funds to complete them.

Council went into executive session, after which members voted to allow Corcoran to proceed with obtaining bids for the relocation of water lines at the Bush Valley Swim Club on Hardy Road.

The waters lines are being moved to accommodate the placement of a building to house two new businesses, Corcoran said.

Four council members voted for the project, while Councilman Ray Sandifer abstained because of a conflict of interest. He is a member of the club's board of directors.
