BOARD AWARDS CONTRACT TO STUDY CRAIG CITY NEEDS
The Craig County Board of Supervisors has approved funds for a study to determine need for utility and housing improvements in Craig City, a subdivision near here. The supervisors awarded a $25,000 contract to Mattern & Craig, a consulting and engineering firm in Roanoke, for the study. The money came from a grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
Once the study identifies specific projects, the county plans to apply for a rehabilitation grant of up to $2.2 million.
On another matter at their Tuesday meeting, the supervisors approved a revised 1992-93 portion of the six-year highway plan.
The amount of construction funding proposed in the plan is $292,226. But Steven Buston, acting resident engineer in the area that includes Craig, said that amount probably would be less.
In the first and second years of the plan, most of the available revenue - $125,000 each year - must be applied to a debt from the construction of a bridge on Virginia 606 several years ago.
The supervisors also received a report from Bruce Lee, county electoral board chairman, recommending the combining of several voting precincts to save about $900.
The electoral board recommends combining Givens-Reynolds, McGuires Store and Marshall Store precincts to save about $600. Combining Craig Springs and Forks of John precincts will save another $300, Lee said.
