VIRGINIA 738 BRIDGE TO CLOSE FOR REPAIR
Virginia 738 bridge to close for repairThe bridge over Laymantown Creek on Virginia 738 in Botetourt County will be closed for repair Monday through Jan. 31 from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily.
The bridge is approximately one-tenth of a mile from Virginia 738's westbound intersection with U.S. 460, near Coyner Springs. Access to the remaining portion of Virginia 738 is available through its eastbound intersection with U.S. 460.
Repairs to the bridge include replacing its floor and respacing beams.
Adult course schedule set in Roanoke County
The Roanoke County Public Schools' Department of Adult and Continuing Education is accepting registration in courses for the winter term.
Classes are open to all adults regardless of educational level or residence. Students age 60 and older may receive a 10 percent tuition discount.
Courses will be offered in the following areas: accounting and finance, arts and crafts, computers, cooking, dog obedience, engineering and architecture, investments, floral design, food service, GED review, dancing, parenting, health, income tax, industrial safety and health, insurance, interior design, management, marketing, amateur radio, real estate, SAT preparation, self-defense, shorthand and typing, and trade and industrial skills.

The Music School at Vinton Baptist Church has begun winter/spring classes for children ages 2-6. Classes will continue through May.
The comprehensive music learning system teaches children basic musical concepts geared to their age levels. Instruction includes singing, rhythm instruments and some piano. Each weekly session also includes a craft activity to reinforce that day's lesson.
Musical Treats is for 2- and young 3-year-olds; Music Box is for 3- and young 4-year-olds; and Pathways is for 4- to 6-year-olds.
New classes are forming according to need and interest. The cost is $20 per month, and some scholarships are available. For schedules and other information, call Beth Lane at 343-7685. Council seeks entries for black history parade
Salem's Community Awareness Council is accepting entries in its third annual Black History Celebration Parade to be held Feb. 8.
Businesses, churches, schools, and civic and social groups are invited to enter floats, bands, cars, marching groups or other expressions of black heritage or racial harmony.
Participants will line up at Longwood Park beginning at 10:30 a.m. The parade will begin at 11, proceeding west along Main Street, south on Broad Street, circling onto White Oak Street to disband behind the Salem Parks and Recreation Department.

William H. Lipscomb has been elected worshipful master of Williamson Road Masonic Lodge 163 for 1992.

S. James Sikkema, director of the Mental Health Division of Mental Health Services of the Roanoke Valley, has been elected president of the Mental Health Association of Virginia.
Sikkema has been with Mental Health Services of the Roanoke Valley since 1975 as coordinator of inpatient services, director of outpatient services and director of the Division of Substance Abuse Services. He has been director of the Mental Health Division since 1988.
