Roanoke County mulch is free for the taking
Roanoke County is offering free mulch made from chopped-up Christmas trees and fall leaves.
The mulch is available to the public Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Southwest Industrial Park. Residents of Roanoke and Roanoke County can take as much mulch as they like in vehicles no larger than a 1-ton pickup. Mulch must be picked up by Jan. 31.
To get to the industrial park, take Starkey Road south from Virginia 419. Turn right onto Merriman Road and then right onto Commonwealth Drive. The industrial park is behind Penn Forest Elementary School.
Pine and leaf mulch contains nutrients that make soil more fertile for flower and vegetable gardens. Mulch also provides warmth and helps retain soil moisture.
