Jeff Spells pumped in 23 points and Jason Ross added 18 as Galax defeated Giles 69-56 in a Mountain Empire District boys' basketball game Thursday night.The Maroon Tide (6-5, 6-3) led 40-23 at halftime, helped by a rebounding edge and numerous fast-break baskets.

MARTINSVILLE - The underdog Chiefs made a game of it until missing a couple of long shots at the end and the Gaels made their free throws to hold on for the non-conference victory.
Kevin Brady led Holy Cross with 20 points.
Carlisle (1-11) was led by Andy Sands' 18 points. Trent Bowles had 14, and Donnie Pennington added 11. \
Wednesday's games
\ Covington Boys Home 87, Union, W.Va. 86: At Union, W.Va., Donnie Costigan gunned in 35 points, but the two scored by Mark Webb were the difference. Webb scored his only points of the game with four seconds left to give Covington Boys Home (7-2) the victory. \
John Battle 42, Chilhowie 38: At Bristol, Mickey Wright had 13 points to lead the Trojans. The Warriors were led by Jason Fore with 10 points. \
