AIDS vaccine works in tests on monkeys

Scientists working toward an AIDS vaccine have shown for the first time that it is possible to protect monkeys against the simian version of AIDS by using a new kind of vaccine made not with the whole virus itself but with a mere protein molecule copied from the virus.

Advances on monkey AIDS are significant because early experiments must be done on animals and the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), a close relative of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), is the only one that causes an AIDS-like disease in monkeys.

The development is reported in today's issue of the journal Science. - The Washington Post \

Scientists discover new human hormone

SAN DIEGO - In the first discovery of its kind in more than 20 years, San Diego scientists have found a new hormone in the human body - a molecule that shows promise in influencing the development of the human embryo, regulation of cholesterol and treatments of cancer.

"It's rare to discover new hormonal systems, historically, they represent major discoveries . . . so we are extremely excited," said Ron Evans, head of the Gene Expression Laboratory at the Salk Institute and an author of the study published in today's issue of Cell.

The new hormone, 9-cis retinoic acid, is a derivative of vitamin A. While scientists had known 9-cis retinoic acid existed, they had not realized it was in the human body. - Los Angeles Times
