SPELLS, ROSS LEAD GALAX BY GILES 69-56

Jeff Spells pumped in 23 points and Jason Ross added 18 as Galax defeated Giles 69-56 in a Mountain Empire District boys' basketball game Thursday night.

The Maroon Tide (6-5, 6-3) led 40-23 at halftime, helped by a rebounding edge and numerous fast-break baskets.

Giles was led by Rusty Stafford with 12 points. \

Brookville 67

Liberty 61

LYNCHBURG - The Bees (10-2, 10-2) got 19 points and 12 rebounds from Greg Coffee in holding off the visiting Minutemen (4-8, 4-8) for the Seminole District victory.

Each time Brookville pulled ahead, Liberty fought back with a turnover-forcing defense, closing a 12-point second-quarter deficit to trail 62-59 with just over a minute to play. Coffee's three free throws helped the Bees pull away.

Chris Dean led Liberty with 26 points. \
