AUSTIN ELECTED TO TENNIS HALL OF FAME

Tracy Austin, who won the U.S. Open singles championship at age 16, will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., this year.

She will be joined at the July 11 enshrinement ceremonies by Philippe Chatrier of France and the doubles team of Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan.

Austin was the youngest ever Open singles champion in 1979 when she defeated Chris Evert in straight sets. She won a second Open title two years later over Martina Navratilova.

She was the top-ranked tennis player in the world in 1980 and won a total of 31 titles during six years.

\ Former University of Virginia quarterback Shawn Moore has signed to play in the World League of American Football this season.

Moore, a member of the Denver Broncos, will play for one of the seven North American teams - Birmingham, New York-New Jersey, Montreal, San Antonio, Sacramento, Orlando or Ohio - that will have four NFL teams assigned to them.

"We hope to get, say, 10 quarterbacks who are No. 3s with their team or No. 2s for teams that don't carry three quarterbacks," said Jerry Vainisi, the WLAF's vice president of football management. "We'd like to get 10 Shawn Moores."
