VIRGINIA TECH HIT BULL'S-EYE WITH QB RECRUIT
Virginia Tech has received a football commitment from one of its prime recruiting targets, quarterback Dave Tolan from Manasquan (N.J.) High School.Tolan passed for more than 4,000 yards in his career and led Manasquan to back-to-back 11-0 seasons and a pair of Group 2 state championships in his junior and senior year.
Tolan (6 feet 3, 195 pounds) visited Tech, New Hampshire and Massachusetts and canceled a trip to Syracuse.
Tolan passed for more than 1,000 yards as a senior despite missing five games with a bruised shoulder. Nevertheless, he was a second-team all-state selection.
"I told Coach [Frank] Beamer [at Tech] that Dave is the best quarterback I've coached or seen in 27 years," Manasquan coach Vic Kubu said.
"He's an athlete. He can drop back, sprint out. He can do a lot of the things Tech does."
In other football recruiting:
Place-kicker Bjorn Merten from Centreville High School has made a commitment to UCLA. Merten was the first kicker since 1985 to be rated one of the top 25 prospects in Virginia by the Roanoke Times & World-News.
Missouri has received a commitment from quarterback Brandon Corso from Woodson High in Fairfax. Corso passed for 2,224 yards as a junior, but was injured this season and played in only seven games.
