UNITED WAY COMES WITHIN A HAIR OF GOAL
United Way of Roanoke Valley's 1991 campaign came within 1 percent of its $4.7 million goal.United Way officials said Thursday that they were pleased, considering how difficult it is to raise money during tough economic times.
The final take of about $4.65 million was 3.2 percent more than the United Way had raised in 1990. It is the smallest increase in seven years, but it is in line with the increases at other United Ways across the United States.
The annual campaign helps support three dozen United Way partners along with 50 other health and human services agencies.
More than 40,000 people contributed to the campaign - about one-third of all employed people in the Roanoke Valley.
Also Thursday, United Way announced that James Arend has been named chairman of the agencies' board of directors. Arend, senior vice president of Atlantic Mutual Companies, succeeds Houston Bell Jr.
