FLOYD GETS BACK AT FORT CHISWELL
Fred Via scored 25 points as Floyd County broke on top early and coasted to a 74-62 boys' basketball victory over Fort Chiswell on Friday night in a battle for first place in the Mountain Empire District.Floyd County (11-1 overall, 9-1 Mountain Empire) led 40-21 at the half and pushed the margin to 24 late in the game. Fort Chiswell, which handed Floyd its only loss, is 10-2, 8-2.
Travis Crawford added 16 points and Mike Hylton 14 for the Buffaloes.
Brian Lampkins had 22 points for Fort Chiswell. \

GATE CITY - Marion made six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to put away the Blue Devils and remain unbeaten in the Highlands District.
Brian Cregger sank four 3-pointers on his way to 20 points to pace the Scarlet Hurricane (11-2, 5-0). Tim Henson added 15 points and Eddie Boothe 13.
Gate City is 3-9, 1-4. \

COVINGTON - The Cougars didn't get their first lead until late in the first half, then they ran away from the Chargers for a Pioneer District victory.
Covington (8-3, 8-1) took a 28-27 lead with a little less than two minutes left in the second quarter but closed out Bath with a 10-1 spurt.
The Cougars shot 62 percent (21-of-34) to put the game away in the second half. Covington also had a 45-21 advantage in rebounds.
Ramon Sampson led Covington with 20 points and nine rebounds. In his first game after coming back from academic suspension, sophomore Van Wallace scored 16 points and had five rebounds.
Craig Phillips led Bath County (9-4, 8-3) with 14 points. \

NATURAL BRIDGE - Chuck Baker scored 22 points and the Fighting Blues guarded their nine-point halftime lead to topple the Rockets in a Pioneer District game.
Craig Floyd added 12 points and Eric Carter 11 for Parry McCluer (5-6, 4-5).
Joey Staton scored 15, Robert Austin 11 and Kenny Lewis 11 for the Rockets (5-6, 5-4). \

STUART - Trailing by seven in the second quarter, the Cougars rallied to take a halftime lead, then maintained it to win their first game of the season in a Piedmont District battle.
After a double technical foul on Chatham (1-11, 1-9), Patrick County (1-11, 1-9) made three of four field goals to start its run in the second quarter. The Cougars led 33-28 at the half and gradually pulled away over the final 16 minutes.
Mike Wood and Chad Joyce each scored 13, and Jon Vaughn and Chris Reynolds added 12 points for Patrick County. Chris Turner paced Chatham with 14 points.

MARTINSVILLE - The Bulldogs scored four points in the second quarter but lived to tell about a Piedmont District victory.
Maurice Spencer scored 14 points and Michael Frazier 13 for Martinsville (9-2, 8-2). The Bulldogs led 17-8, but were outscored 14-4 in the second quarter to trail 22-21 at halftime.
Lamont Hubbard and Roddy Locust scored 12 each, Eric Waller had 11 and Rodney Irvin finished with 10 for Gretna (4-9, 2-8). \

COLLINSVILLE - Clutch free throws helped the Cavaliers (8-4, 6-4) capture a Piedmont District victory.
Dan River (4-9, 3-7) broke a 68-68 tie on Sonny Motley's basket with about a minute left. But with 34 seconds left, Thad Wade scored, was fouled and made the free throw to put F-C up 71-70.
Dan River's Philip Walker missed the front end of a one-and-one with 29 seconds left, and F-C's Lemuel Jones rebounded, was fouled and made both ends of his one-and-one for a 73-70 lead with 24 seconds to go.
The Cavaliers then got a steal, and Scott Chitwood was fouled. He made both shots with 10 seconds left to clinch the win.
Chitwood had 17 for F-C, going 5-of-6 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line. He was backed by Jones with 14, Wade 10 and Ben Seay 10. Motley had 23 and Brian Gunn 22 for Dan River. \

LEBANON - The Pioneers remained undefeated and protected first place in the Highlands District with a victory over George Wythe.
Lebanon (8-0, 6-0), last year's Group A champion, led by two at halftime and started the second half on an 18-11 run. The Pioneers got 19 points from Aaron Fuller, 13 from Scott Allen and Eric Meadows, and 11 from Ben Campbell.
Chris Waddell scored 17 points and Sie Dickinson 16 for the Maroons (9-5, 7-2), the last team to beat Lebanon in last year's Region C final. \

BASSETT - Tarrace Carter scored 18 points and dominated on the offensive boards as the Trojans (5-6, 5-4) overcame the Bengals (6-5, 6-4) with a big fourth quarter.
Tunstall had 20 offensive rebounds, with Carter leading the way. The Trojans also outscored cold-shooting Bassett 20-9 in the fourth quarter. Overall, the losers made only 23 of 63 shots from the field against the Trojans' zone defense.
Chris Walton added 12 points and Dedric Rogers 10 for Tunstall. Art Wade had a game-high 23 to lead Bassett. \

CHILHOWIE - Sidney Barr had 23 points and 17 rebounds to power the Warriors past the Cavaliers in a Hogoheegee District matchup.
Patrick Brooks finished with 14 points for Chilhowie (4-6, 3-3), which pulled away from a 48-48 tie after three quarters.
James Hurley scored 19 and Jason Rush 16 to lead the Cavaliers (6-7, 3-5).

RURAL RETREAT - O.J. Williams scored 25 points as Castlewood kept the Indians winless in the Hogoheegee District.
Travis Yates finished with 15 points for the Blue Devils (5-6, 3-4), who went ahead for good in the third quarter after a halftime tie.
Thomas Taylor scored 18 points to lead Rural Retreat (1-10, 0-8). Jason Childers added 13, Michael Houseman 13 and Joseph Brookshire 11 for the Indians. \

CHATHAM - Hargrave Military rallied in the fourth quarter to notch a Virginia Independent Conference victory.
Roanoke Catholic (9-5, 5-3) led 47-43 with about three minutes left, but Hargrave tied it at 47. The last tie came at 49-49 with about two minutes left. Hargrave's DeWayne Swinton broke the tie with a basket, and the Celtics scored only two points the rest of the way.
Swinton led all scorers with 22 points, and Bobby Burk had 11 and Joe Parrish 10 for Hargrave (5-4, 4-3). Tony Williams had 17 for Roanoke Catholic and Charles Cunningham 16. \

The Raiders bounced back in the second half to pull out a Blue Ridge Conference game.
Carlisle held North Cross to three points in each of the first two quarters and led 14-6 at half. But the Raiders allowed one point in the third quarter and outscored Carlisle 17-6 in the fourth.
Brandy Markell led North Cross (4-9, 2-7) with seven points. \
