SENIORS PROPEL BOTETOURT
First it was Derek Loyd. Then Craig Layman. And, finally, Bobby Prince. The three Lord Botetourt seniors combined for 67 points Friday night, leading the Cavaliers past Alleghany 88-70 in a Blue Ridge District boys' basketball game.
Loyd started hot, scoring eight of the Cavaliers' first 11 points. By the time he sank his second 3-point basket of the first quarter, Lord Botetourt (6-5 overall, 1-0 Blue Ridge) was in command.
"That's how my game has always been," said Loyd, who finished with 21 points. "I'll have a spurt where I make a lot of shots."
The quick start, coupled with Alleghany's problems - 5-of-14 shooting and six turnovers - meant the Mountaineers (7-5, 0-2) trailed 22-12 at the end of the quarter.
"We've been playing so inconsistently and that showed in the first quarter," said Alleghany coach Jimmy Smith, whose team dropped its fourth straight road game. "We turned the ball over when it was still close and they went on something like a 10-point run. Then we had to play catch-up."
Coming back proved difficult. The Mountaineers had cut their deficit to 24-19 when Layman took over inside, scoring seven of his 18 points in the second quarter as Lord Botetourt surged to a 14-point halftime lead.
"A couple of games ago we moved me inside," Layman said. "That seems to have worked real well for me."
In the second half, Alleghany never got closer than 10 points. When the Mountaineers threatened, Prince retaliated. He tallied 19 of his game-high 28 points after intermission.
"I had a little bit of luck; a couple of times I threw it up and it went in," said Prince, the Blue Ridge's top scorer. "But everyone did their job tonight. I feel like we're coming together as a team."
Michael Hunter led Alleghany with 22 points. Todd Wheatley was held to 11, almost six points under his average. \
