COLLEGE AID HOT LINE OFFERED

A toll-free hot line has been set up through the end of January that parents and students can call with questions about college financial aid.

The Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, made up of leaders from public and private schools, offers the hot line from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

This month 450 people have used the hot line, which is staffed by experts from the state's schools, said Paulette Haskins, chairwoman of the financial aid awareness campaign.

"January is a critical month, because that's the earliest point at which people can apply for financial aid," she said.

The number is 1-800-5523006.

The hot line is sponsored by Crestar Bank, and the school with the most students and parents who use it will win a $250 scholarship.
