RAIDERS WIN A SQUEAKER

Only one week after losing to Lynchburg Christian by 29 points at home, North Cross got its revenge by beating the Bulldogs 55-54 in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' basketball game Friday night.

The ending was as shocking as the final score. The Bulldogs (10-4 overall, 6-2 in the VIC) tied the score when Gabe Lyons banked in a 3-point shot with 21 seconds left to make it 54-54.

The Raiders (7-9, 4-4) missed a running shot for the win and the ball, which went out of bounds, was awarded to Lynchburg Christian, the state's seventh-ranked team in the Private Schools basketball poll.

"They had a short guy taking it in, so I put [6-foot-6] Mike Bryan on him. I told him not to go for the low fake, but to keep his hands up," North Cross coach Jim Muscaro said.

The inbounds pass went high. Bryan tipped the ball straight up, grabbed it and was fouled as he went for a layup at the buzzer. Bryan's first free throw went in the basket and back out, then he sank the second shot for the Raiders' victory.
