RADAR-DETECTOR BAN PROPOSED FOR TRUCKS

The Federal Highway Administration proposed Friday banning radar detectors on most trucks and buses.

The proposed rule, which could become permanent after a comment and review period, would affect any vehicle with a gross weight rating of five tons or more, any vehicle carrying 16 passengers or more, or any vehicle hauling hazardous material.

The ban would affect interstate truck and bus traffic, and intrastate traffic in those states that have adopted the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. The FHWA said that includes most states.

Passenger car drivers would not be subject to the ban, although a few states have a blanket ban of radar detectors including Virginia, the District of Columbia and Connecticut. In addition, New York bans radar detectors on commercial vehicles. - The Washington Post
