SHELLFISH HARVEST TEMPORARILY HALTED
A temporary ban on shellfish harvesting along the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is expected to last several days, state health officials said. The ban was imposed Friday because of fears the shellfish could be affected by a continuing sewage spill more than 10 miles away in the Elizabeth River.
The state Department of Health said the ban would affect about a dozen commercial watermen.
Waste water began pouring Wednesday from a 46-year-old concrete sewer pipe six feet under a road in downtown Norfolk.
The spilled sewage is flowing into a storm sewer and then into the Eastern Branch of the river.
