DENTS SLOW TO GET FIXED
Look for more banged-up fenders than usual as long as the recession lasts. That's the word from Robert Goolsby, body shop manager at Harvey's in Radford.
Car owners these days just aren't getting all of the dings and dents knocked out of their vehicles - especially with insurance claims, Goolsby said.
"On small claims, they're leaving the damage on vehicles and banking the money away."
Still, business has been "great" and "growing" at Harvey's body shop, said Goolsby, who makes about $30,000 a year.
Before coming to Radford two years ago, Goolsby, 31, was body shop manager at Allred Chevrolet in Salem.
As manager, Goolsby supervises nine workers, including seven full-time technicians, a part-time technician and a secretary.
His duties include controlling all of the shop's work, from finances to buying, purchasing to estimates.
"I like the challenge. I'm not doing the same thing every minute," he said.
"One minute it's accountant, the next minute a technician. It ranges anywhere in between. Every five minutes I'm doing something different."
