SCHOOL POLICIES ON GUNS:
Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem have similar disciplinary policies for students who bring guns - real or fake - to school.Principals can automatically suspend a student caught with a gun - even a fake gun - for up to 10 days. Longer suspensions, reassignment to another school or counseling for the student is up to the discretion of a review committee. Expulsions must be approved by the School Board and superintendent.
Salem may amend its policy on guns in response to two incidents in the past year. If approved by the School Board, a principal automatically would recommend immediate expulsion for a student with a gun.
