SANDRIDGE, JAMES W.James W. Sandridge, age 97, of Salem died January 25, 1992. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Brown Sandridge. He was born near Crimora, Augusta County, Virginia. He is survived by a son, Col. (Ret.) James W. Sandridge Jr. of Bradenton, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Elinor S. Rolston, Salem; a grandson, MSgt. (Ret.) James W. Sandridge III, Bradenton, Fla.; four granddaughters, Betty S. Johnson, Saipan, Mariana Islands; Sharon R. Kennedy, Catawba; Cindy R. Salay, Herndon; Kimberly R. O'Dell, Augusta, Ga.; six great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Vinton Masonic Lodge No. 204 for over 71 years and a member of the Kazim Temple of Roanoke for nearly 70 years. He had a long career with the Norfolk & Western Railway starting as warehouseman at Troutville in 1911 and progressing through positions as operator, station agent, dispatcher, assistant train master, and train master. He took special pride in the phenomenal tonnage handled by the single-track, Shenandoah Division, responding to the emergency demands of World War II. He felt he was a member of a family of professional railroaders. His final position was as System Rules Supervisor in the office of the vice president and general manager. His work helped facilitate the operational aspects of the N & W-Virginian merger. He was retired in August, 1960. Graveside services will conducted at Sherwood Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 28, 1992, by the Rev. Rob Colwell. Masonic rites will be conducted by Vinton Lodge No. 204. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Salem Rescue Squad. Funeral arrangements by the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem.
