RATE OF BREAST-SPARING SURGERY

Here is a breakdown, by region, of the percentage of breast-cancer cases that were treated with breast-sparing surgery and analyzed in a study.

The 1988 data from hospitals included 41,680 cases, about 10 percent of which involved no surgery. Study co-author Dr. David Winchester said the numbers may not show the true size of regional differences because of limitations in how the study was done.

40.2 percent in the region including Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

29.8 percent in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.

28.1 percent in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

27.9 percent in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

23.8 percent in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

21 percent in the Carolinas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

20.9 percent in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

13.6 percent in the Dakotas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska.

11.5 percent in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.
