CITY HONORS VOLUNTEER ON WHEELS

George Sanderson uses a wheelchair, but he doesn't let that keep him from getting around to help others.

Sanderson does volunteer work with mentally handicapped children in Roanoke schools. He reads to the children and helps them with their writing and math.

He also volunteers with the Virginia Department for the Visually Handicapped, reading for the Blue Ridge Radio Reading Service for the blind.

Sanderson, 64, is chairman of the board of directors for the Center for Independence for the Disabled, which he helped establish; a member of the Mayor's Committee for the Disabled; and a member the city's Task Force on Community Relations.

And as of Monday, he is the city's 1991 Citizen of the Year.

City Council gave Sanderson the award, which was established 11 years ago to recognize contributions to the city through volunteer service or in other ways.

Mayor Noel Taylor said Sanderson is tireless and his "reasoned, pleasant and respectful manner adds to his effectiveness in dealing with often emotional and complex situations."

Sanderson's legs were amputated 12 years ago after he developed a circulatory disorder at the height of a 30-year insurance career.

In other action, council:

Was told that two-thirds of the solid waste generated in the city comes from businesses and industries. For the city to meet state mandates that 25 percent of the city's waste be recycled by 1995, businesses and industries will have to begin recycling, Public Works Director William Clark said. Council saw an 18-minute video that provides information about how businesses can start recycling.

Was told the three-year terms of School Board members Sallye Coleman and Thomas Orr will end June 30. Council will accept applications for the seats until March 10. Application forms may be obtained in the City Clerk's office.
