HOKIES LAND TOP 25 RECRUIT

Virginia Tech was rewarded for its persistence Tuesday when one of the state's top 25 football prospects, as rated by the Roanoke Times & World-News, announced he will sign with the Hokies.

Matt Morrell, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound defensive end from Potomac High in Dumfries, chose Tech after new Stanford coach Bill Walsh decided not to honor the scholarship offer of his predecessor, Dennis Green.

Tech was considered a long shot two months ago when Morrell submitted a list of seven schools he was considering.

Morrell is one of five Top 25 players among Tech's 17 commitments.

In other recruiting:

Virginia received commitments from three defensive linemen, but finished second on one of its chief targets, 6-9, 320-pound Jonathan Ogden of Washington, D.C., who committed to UCLA.

The most prominent UVa commitment was Jonathan Harris (6-7, 260) of Uniondale, N.Y. Harris, rated the No. 4 prospect in New York by SuperPrep magazine, also took visits to Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke and Georgia Tech.

UVa also received commitments from Jeremy Lefeber (6-5, 235) of Fort Myers, Fla., and David Gathman (6-5, 220) of Philadelphia.

Running back Shawn Wilson, a Top 25 choice from Bayside High in Virginia Beach, picked Florida.

Offensive tackle Greg Marafka (6-3, 275) of First Colonial High in Virginia Beach has committed to VMI.
