ALLEGHANY NIPS SALEM 53-52

Michael Hunter hit baseline jumper with six seconds remaining as Alleghany rallied to a 53-52 Blue Ridge District boys' basketball victory over Salem on Tuesday night.

Trailing by 10 with four minutes remaining, the Mountaineers (8-5 overall, 1-2 in the district) used pressure defense to get back into the game.

With Salem leading 50-48, Mark Byington scored to put the Spartans (5-5, 1-1) up four. Hunter hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to pull the Mountaineers to 52-51.

Salem's Josh Pugh was fouled but missed a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 25 seconds left. The Spartans rebounded but missed a follow shot.

Alleghany brought the ball down court and set up Hunter's game-winner.

Hunter scored a game-high 24 for Alleghany.

Pugh led Salem with 23 points. \

Martinsville 84

Dan River 53

Michael Frazier scored 13 points in the first half to lead Martinsville to a 84-53 victory over Dan River in a Piedmont District game. \

Narrows 70

Bland 50

McCreery Manns scored nine points in the second quarter in leading the Green Wave over the Rockets in a Mountain Empire district game.

After taking a four point first quarter lead, Narrows outscored Bland 21-11 in the second and led the rest of the game. \

Galax 85

Fort Chiswell 63

GALAX - Jeff Spells ignited a furious second-half attack as the Maroon Tide pummeled the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game.

Spells, a 6-foot-2 junior forward, scored 37 points, making 16 of 17 shots from the floor, including a 3-pointer, and two of three free throws.

Spells sparked a 28-12 Galax surge in the third quarter, scoring 14 points mostly on 10-12 footers off picks on the low post. Jason Ross, who had 15 for the game, scored eight four-quarter points and assisted on four other baskets as the Maroon Tide spread the floor and picked apart Fort Chiswell's man-to-man defense.

Stanley Meador was a force inside for Galax, scoring 19 points when the Pioneers failed in an attempt to use a triangle-and-two defense to stop Spells and Ross.

Galax is 8-5, 8-3 in the league, and is tied for third place with Fort Chiswell (10-3, 8-3) behind Floyd County and Grayson County. \

Gretna 62

Magna Vista 56

GRETNA - The Hawks let a late lead slip away but survived the overtime period to pull off a Piedmont District upset.

Gretna (5-9, 3-8) led by five, 54-49, with 20 seconds remaining, but missed three straight free throws. Magna Vista's Marcus Toney hit a 3-pointer with one second left to tie the score at 54-54 and send the game into an extra period.

In overtime, Eric Waller hit three of four free throws and the Hawks outscored the Warriors (10-3, 8-3) 8-2.

For Gretna, it was the third overtime game in its last five outings. The other two were losses.

Lamont Hubbard finished with 18 points, Waller 17 and Rodney Irvin 13 for Gretna, which had only five scorers.

Brian Taylor scored 14, Rodney Redd 11 and Toney 10 for Magna Vista. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 65

COLLINSVILLE - The Bengals hit 29 of 31 free throws to stave off the Cavaliers in the Piedmont District.

Guard Dytonyon Norman scored 33 points for Bassett (8-5, 7-4), which won the game at the free-throw line, outscoring Fieldale-Collinsville (8-5, 6-5) by 25 points.

Kevin Hodge's 18 points led the Bengals. \

WYTHEVILLE - Chris Waddell scored 24 points to lead four double-figure scorers as the Maroons (10-5, 7-2) pounded the Cavaliers (6-8, 3-6) in a Hogoheegee District mismatch.

Jason Rush led Holston with 20 points. \

RURAL RETREAT - Gus Wild scored 19 points as the Rebels ripped the cold-shooting Indians in a Hogoheegee District contest.

Patrick Henry-Glade Spring (3-10, 2-7) led 29-9 at halftime. Rural Retreat (1-12, 0-9) hit only 3 of 22 shots from the field in the first half.

Michael Houseman led the losers with 14 points. \

Bath County 54

Natural Bridge 49

HOT SPRINGS - The Chargers scored the game's final nine points to score the Pioneer District win.

Natural Bridge led 49-45 with three minutes left, but never scored again. Todd Jenkins ignited Bath's comeback with a 3-pointer, then Lee Phillips and Craig Phillips each hit a pair of free throws to give the Chargers the lead for good.

Jenkins led Bath County (10-4, 9-3) with 20 points. The Chargers outscored the Rockets (5-7, 5-5) 26-9 at the free-throw line.

Marty Early paced the losers with 16 points. \

Covington 62

Rockbridge 54

FAIRFIELD - Trailing by 10 after a quarter, the Rebels caught up in the fourth and took a brief lead, but they couldn't hold on as the Cougars took a Pioneer District game.

Van Wallace scored 15 to pace Covington (10-3, 10-1) and Tony Jeter added 14 points. William Sensabaugh scored 18 for Rockbridge (3-11, 2-10). \

Tunstall 75

Patrick County 51

STUART - Chris Walton scored 18 of his game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter as the Trojans ran away from the Cougars for a Piedmont District victory.

Leading 41-36 after three quarters, Tunstall (6-7, 6-5) outscored Patrick County 34-15 over the final eight minutes. The Cougars (1-12, 1-10) led 25-24 but were overwhelmed in the second half. Chris Reynolds led Patrick County with 23 points. \

Laurel Park 114

Chatham 69

MARTINSVILLE - Odell Hodge scored 41 points as the Lancers rolled up what was believed to be a school record for points scored in the runaway Piedmont District victory over the Cavaliers.

Hodge, who entered the game with a 27.5 scoring average, came up a point shy of his career high despite playing only three quarters. Ronnie Jackson added 14 points for Laurel Park (12-2, 11-0), which erupted for 62 first-half points.

Dave Motley had 17 points and Chris Turner 16 for Chatham (1-12, 1-10).

Chilhowie 49

MARION - Eric Hungate and Eddie Boothe had 14 points each in leading the Scarlet Hurricane (12-2) to the non-district victory over the visiting Warriors (4-7).

Timmy Henson added 11 points and Hungate had four steals, seven assists and five rebounds for Marion, which took control with improved ball-handling and defense in the 20-10 second quarter.

Sidney Barr led Chilhowie with 16 points and Jason Fore had 13. \

Covington Boys' Home 77

Gateway Christian 75

COVINGTON - The visiting Crusaders (10-5) pulled close with two late 3-pointers, but the Indians (9-2) kept the lead by making nine free throws in the closing minutes.

Donnie Costigan led Covington Boys' Home with 22 points and Paul Moore had 21.

Tim Henderson led Gateway Christian with 30. \

Forsyth Country Day 63

Carlisle 48

MARTINSVILLE - Second-half turnovers and a tough man-to-man defense got the better of the Chiefs (2-12) in a non-district loss to the visitors from Winston-Salem, N.C.

Carlisle trailed 45-40 after three quarters and shot 50 percent (11-for-22) in the second half, but Forsyth Country Day's defense proved too much. Carlisle had 17 turnovers in the game, 10 in the second half.

Donnie Pennington's 17 points and Trent Bowles' 14 led Carlisle, which made 21 of 48 field-goal attempts.

Kenny Herbst led Forsyth Country Day (5-14) with 16 points. \

Monday's game

Magna Vista 87, Tunstall 64: Forward Rodney Redd's game-high 25 points and the Warriors' pressure defense proved too much for the Trojans in the Piedmont District game.

Rodney Tanks added 14 points and Marcus Toney and Tony Holmes had 11 each for Magna Vista, which led 39-32 at halftime and pulled away with a 25-17 third quarter.

Tunstall committed 28 turnovers and played without injured guard Khris Law, who averages 17 points and was all-district as a freshman last season.

Junior center Tarrace Carter led Tunstall (5-7, 5-5) with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Chris Walton added 12 points and Dedric Rogers had 11. \
