HIGHLIGHTS

A coalition of rural and urban lawmakers from both parties backed the plan ofHouse Majority Leader Richard Cranwell, D-Vinton, for a $1.15 billion general obligation bond issue tied to a sales tax increase.

The House of Delegates voted 77-20 to pass a bill allowing state-run liquor stores to open on holidays other than Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

The House Courts of Justice Committee voted unanimously to endorse a bill to require six-month suspension of driver's licenses for people convicted of drug offenses.

The House Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee voted 14-4 to endorse a bill allowing police officers to obtain AIDS test results of any person who may have exposed them to the AIDS virus.

The Senate Privileges and Elections Committee unanimously approved a bill barring anyone from holding two elective offices at the same time.

The Senate Local Government Committee unanimously approved a bill creating a Virginia Baseball Stadium Authority to finance a stadium if Northern Virginia gets a major league baseball franchise.
