VA. LOTTERY PROFITS LOWER THAN EXPECTED

The Virginia Lottery is about a large jackpot away from reaching its overall sales goals, lottery officials said.

For December, the state's profit from the lottery totaled $23.5 million, or 10 percent below the $26.1 million projection for the month. For the fiscal year to date, which began in July, profits totaled $139.9 million, or 3 percent below projections.

The lottery expected it would have four large Lotto jackpots of about $20 million each, which spur ticket sales. But the past several weeks have seen a series of relatively low jackpots, keeping sales low.
