E&H TO REVIEW 112 APPLICANTS FOR PRESIDENT

Applications from 112 people wanting to succeed Charles Sydnor as president of Emory & Henry College have been submitted to a Presidential Search and Selection Committee of the Board of Trustees.

David W. Parrish, a Charlottesville lawyer who is committee chairman, said the selection is to be made May 23.

The board met last weekend and authorized a $1.2 million renovation of Weaver Hall, a women's dormitory built in 1902. It also agreed to a 6.7 percent tuition increase for 1992-93, its smallest since 1984.

It voted to allow a spring pledge period for fraternities and sororities, following nearly a year of restrictions after reported instances of pledging violations. But the trustees reserved the right to reconsider future pledge periods if there are problems.

Joseph P. Johnson Jr., an Abingdon lawyer and House of Delegates member, was re-elected board president for 1992. - Southwest bureau
